Small animal imaging is a critical component of modern cancer research that bridges the gap between experimental and clinical studies. Setting up and operating a small animal PET research facility is a complex undertaking with unique challenges governed by radiation safety and animal care regulations. Although each institution will face its own local concerns and restrictions, the key components that go into the planning and operation of a small animal PET imaging facility are described. The main elements that are required include equipment, space, radiation safety, animal care, record keeping and technical aspects of injections and image acquisition. Finally, representative images are presented from different experimental studies.
