Prevalence of Poultry Coccidiosis and Its Determinants in Small Scale Poultry Farming System Around Arba Minch Town, Southern Ethiopia - Abstract
Despite the presence of a large number of chickens in Ethiopia, contribution to the national economy and benefit from this sector is very limited due to
disease problems. Cross sectional study was conducted on two exotic breeds, Sasso T44 and bovans brown, from September 2023 to April 2023 in and around
Arba Minch town, southern Ethiopia. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of coccidiosis, to identify species of Eimeria and to assess
potential risk factors. The study involved fecal floatation techniques, postmortem examination of chickens’ intestines for gross lesions and mucosal scraping to
determine predilection site and identification of Eimeria species. Two stage cluster sampling technique was used to sample the study chickens and the data
was analysed by using univariable and mutivariale logistic regression. An overall of 1004 examined chickens, 219(21.81%) were harbored different Eimeria
species. In the current study, statistically significant differences (p<0.05) were observed in clinical status of the chickens, prophylaxis provision, litter moisture and
water sources. The five Eimeria species identified were E. tenella, E. necatrix, E. maxima, E. burnetti and E. acervulina with the proportion of 37.44%, 18.72%,
16.44%, 15.53% and 11.87%, respectively. Postmortem examination was carried out on 24 chicken, out of which 19 (79.17%) were positive to coccidiosis
by mucosal scraping examination and pathological lesions were observed on the different parts of small intestine and caecum. In conclusion, the present study
showed that coccidiosis is an important disease of poultry in the study area and strict sanitary and preventive measures needed to be implemented to reduce
the loss due to poultry coccidiosis.
