Glucocorticoids (GCs) are released from the adrenal cortex through activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis when stimulated by stressful conditions, and exert important functions, including an increase in plasma glucose levels and upregulation of anti-inflammatory mechanisms.
