Mental disorders represent some of the most complex challenges in medical research and healthcare, affecting millions of individuals worldwide.
The brain is the primary locus of mental disorders and neuroscientific research has provided critical insights into the biochemical and structural alterations associated with these conditions. Investigations utilizing advanced imaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), elucidate how modifications in brain activity correlate with mental illness symptoms. This research not only aids in understanding the pathophysiology of disorders such as depression and schizophrenia but also facilitates the development of targeted therapeutic interventions.
Emerging research on the gut-brain axis suggests a significant association between gut microbiota and mental health.
